Anyone want to read details of people who local police “sent to calaboose” between 1858 and 1860?
If so, head over to the website of the Shelby County Register of Deeds. The register’s office has put online the Memphis Police Blotter for that period. The blotter contains some 6,000 entries and includes a record kept of people “sent to calaboose” – or, brought into the jail.
The online version displays a scan of the original blotter along with a searchable database. It includes some descriptions of defendants, like one who was described as a “low, dirty vagrant; not worth nothing.” Another was described as a “drunken scamp lying out like a hog.”
