Cab company raises money in memory of slain driver

Yellow Cab and its drivers and employees have raised $1,000 and donated the money to CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County.

The donation was in the memory of slain cab driver Kevin Grills. Grills was shot in the back several times on August 14 near Downtown. Thanks to a citizen’s tip called to CrimeStoppers and a match to the in-cab video footage, police made an arrest within 48 hours.

“We matched money raised by our drivers and our employees,” said Yellow Cab President Ham Smythe IV. “We wanted to honor CrimeStoppers for all the good work the organization does in our community to help solve crimes.”

Said CrimeStoppers executive director E. Winslow (Buddy) Chapman, “I can promise that the funds raised by Mr. Grills’ fellow workers and the taxi company will be used to help chase down criminals in our community and get them off the street.”
