Local Restaurant News Roundup

Memphis’ restaurant scene is seeing tons of activity. Here are some of the highlights:

Pollard’s BBQ of 4560 Elvis Presley Blvd. will make its Food Network debut Wednesday, May 30, on Restaurant: Impossible. The show, hosted by celebrity chef Robert Irvine, selects failing restaurants and has 48 hours and $10,000 to revamp the menu, staff and décor before opening it back up to the public and interviewing patrons on the new experience.

Owner Tarrance Pollard is “experiencing growing pains after upgrading from a takeout operation to a giant eat-in restaurant only four months earlier,” according to the show’s website, and “is clinging onto his cherished family barbecue recipe and refusing to see how cutting corners and failing to adapt to the challenges of a large restaurant is causing his business to fail.” Sounds like a must-see. Tune in tonight at 9 p.m.

Meanwhile, Aldo’s Pizza Pies filed a business license last week for 100 S. Main, suite 101, listing the owner as Pac App LLC, according to The Daily News online, www.memphisdailynews.com. The restaurant – owned by a partnership that includes Bargdog and The Slider Inn’s Aldo DeMartino – will occupy 3,887 square feet in the ground floor of Henry Turley Co.’s Barboro Flats, serving hand-tossed New York-style pizza and sub sandwiches in addition to offering a full bar. The expected opening date is June 20.

Also recently filing a business license was Rinaldo Grisanti for a Ronnie Grisanti Italian Restaurant at 684 W. Poplar Ave. Grisanti quietly closed his longtime Grisanti’s restaurant location at 2855 Poplar Ave. in January before opening his new restaurant Feb. 3 at the Stella Marris nightclub, 7955 Fischer Steel Road in Cordova, where he has also since left.

Meanwhile, Antonio Martinez has applied for a business license for his third Las Delicias at 5689 Quince Road and Arkansas-based Larry’s Pizza has filed paperwork for its tableside buffet concept in Kirby Gate Shopping Center at 2857 Kirby Parkway.

What’s more, Low Arts Tea Haven is preparing to open in Carriage Crossing, 4630 Merchants Park Circle, in July. Everyone’s heard of “high tea,” but this restaurant promises “low tea” with a more casual, funky atmosphere.

Low Arts Tea Haven will offer tea flights (a la wine/beer flights) and jazz brunches, and already has several events posted on its website – and not just tea-related: a writing workshop in late July, artisan Christmas gifts and a book club in September, and so on.

And last but not least, Bleu Restaurant and Lounge in The Westin Memphis Beale Street is hosting the Memphis Farmers Market’s first “Farm To Fork Brunch” of the season Sunday, June 3 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Executive Chef Robert Nam Cirillo has created a three-course menu with ingredients from local farms such as Woodson Ridge, Gracious Gardens, Claybrook, Fletcher, Bonny Blue and several others in the area.

The prix fixe brunch is $35 and will feature live music. A percentage of the revenue generated will be donated back to the Memphis Farmers Market.
