Today marks Uncle Lou’s Fried Chicken’s 11th year in business at 3633 Millbranch Road.
Louis Martin opened Uncle Lou’s in April 2001 after working for two separate restaurants of “moderate success” for two decades prior, according to its website. Since then, Uncle Lou’s has appeared twice on the Food Network, once on “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” and once on “The Best Thing I Ever Ate – With My Hands.”
As you’ll see in the video below, the basis of Uncle Lou’s secret recipe comes from Martin’s great grandmother, and involves all purpose flour, black pepper, salt, onion, garlic and cinnamon. Martin’s “sweet spicy love” sauce is similar to a buffalo wing sauce and includes red wine vinegar, Cajun Chef Louisiana hot sauce, garlic, chili powder, paprika, onion, celery salt, sugar, lemon pepper, hickory smoke and honey.
“This is called the corruption,” Martin said of the sauce. “Once you’ve tasted it, you’ve been corrupted.”
Besides fried whole chickens and wings, Uncle Lou’s menu features honey dipped fried bologna, smoked sausage and a monster burger. Sides include fried pickles, okra, onion rings and my personal favorite, corn nuggets.
