Memphis-based Malco Theatres has acquired a shuttered 10-screen movie theatre and outdoor amphitheatre in Oxford, Miss.
Malco also is acquiring the adjacent property in the Oxford Commons development so it can double the size of the building and convert it to a Family Entertainment Center, including a 26-lane bowling center, a bar and restaurant and a game area featuring a laser maze and bumper cars.
The theatre will be remodeled with new rocking chair seats, an upgraded sound system and new state-of-the-art digital projection. Because of the additional screens, Malco will show a range of independent, foreign and smaller films as well, in addition to showing concerts, operas, sporting events and live theatre on the screens.
The theatre portion of the development will open by Labor Day, and the rest of the center – which will employ about 100 people – will be completed next year.
This is Malco’s second Family Entertainment Center, joining the recently opened Premier Lanes and Family Entertainment Center in Gonzales, La.
