Amazon Might Need to Collect Sales Tax Anyway
BusinessWeek is out with a story noting a proposal in Congress that if implemented would mean we’d start having to pay sales tax on all the music downloads, books, DVDs and more we order from Amazon.com.
It’s a battle the Tennessee legislature recently took up, engaging in a bit of saber rattling to not be seen as giving Amazon too sweet of a deal to build facilities in Tennessee.
The bottom line, though, is even if lawmakers dragooned Amazon into collecting sales tax, it may not hurt the e-commerce giant all that much – maybe even at all.
As the BusinessWeek story notes, Amazon still beats competitors like Target and Best Buy on price.
