Twitter and #Memflood (stats included)

Social media outlets, Twitter in particularly, have proved a lightning-fast means of accessing a treasure trove of the latest information as Memphis reels from torrential rains and historic levels of flooding.

Tweets labeled with the hashtag “#memflood” have provided a virtual community bulletin board with the latest word on street closures, pictures of flooded areas, weather warnings and more.

And it’s had a big, big reach, according to the most recent statistics.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Monday, a random sampling of 500 tweets with the #memflood hashtag had generated almost 1.2 million views that reached an audience of more than 154,000 followers in the preceding 24 hours.

Tweets like this one from Twitter user @600WREC: “A shelter at the Millington Civic Ctr. at 8077 Wilkinsville Rd. has been set up for Millington residents in the evacuated zone. #memflood”

From Twitter user @Brizzyc: “Loud thunder and pouring, soaking rain in Midtown Memphis after full day of same. It just keeps coming. #memflood”

Twitter user @HowellMarketing wrote: “#Twitter is the tripwire for #news (been sayin’ it for a year.)

How about you? Who else out there has been feverishly re-checking their Twitter stream, especially for #memflood posts?
