Glee Meets Wii: White Station Alumnus’s Gamer Musical

Imagine for a moment that the hit television series “Glee” airs exclusively online and that its characters have been replaced with technophilic teenage gamers.

The result might be something like “The Perks of Writing a Musical,” an upbeat, feel-good musical web show created and directed by former Memphian and current New Yorker Tom Diggs, who has launched an online campaign to help fund the pilot for what he describes as “Glee meets Wii.”

Diggs, a 1979 White Station High School graduate and alumnus of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, was nominated in 2008 for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for “Fair and Decent,” a play commissioned by The Kennedy Center examining the demise of unbiased media.

For “The Perks of Writing a Musical,” Diggs has assembled a cast of actor-singers and a creative team that draws from the Broadway community and Hollywood’s independent film world, all of whom are donating their time and talent to the innovative web-based project.

According to the project’s Kickstarter fundraising website, it centers on “the youthful world of teen-aged gamers, what makes them play, love and create. It’s about the challenges of true intimacy in a tech-driven world and the transformative nature of art.”
