Tennessee Ranks No. 4 in Retirement Destination Survey

Tennessee is giving Florida a run for its money.

In a baby boomer survey conducted by Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based Del Webb, 12 percent of respondents chose Tennessee as a place they thought they might move to later in life.

The top five states were:

  • North Carolina, 19 percent
  • South Carolina, 16 percent
  • Florida, 15 percent
  • Tennessee, 12 percent
  • Virgina, 10 percent

Tennessee is one of five Southern states with 83 towns and counties to be designated as Certified Retirement Communities by various state agencies, and more certifications are on the way, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Now found in Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia, CRCs have roughly doubled in four years. CRCs date back to the 1990s, when local governments and businesses began to pursue retirees an attractive growth alternative to the creation of new jobs.
