Fred, the Memphis Zoo’s African lion, has died at 20, an advanced age for a member of his species.
Fred came to the Memphis Zoo from the Toledo Zoo in 2003.
“If you were late feeding him or letting him out, Fred would always let you know,” zookeeper Louie Bell said in a release. “The zoo seems really quiet without his roar today.”
Fred leaves behind a female lion, Savannah.
The zoo is on the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ list to receive African lions and the staff say they hope to have another male in the near future.
