First Horizon National Corp. hosts investor day

First Horizon National Corp., the Memphis-based parent of First Tennessee Bank, is hosting an Investor Day at FedExForum on Thursday (Nov. 21).

Investor Days are opportunities for companies to share their strategies and forecasts with an audience of analysts and investors.

Analysts are liable to get “lots of color,” according to Wunderlich Securities bank analyst Kevin Reynolds. “Historically,” he wrote in a note to clients, “(First Horizon) management has been relatively transparent in communicating its strategies with investors and analysts.”

Greater Memphis Chamber picks its latest batch of 10 companies to watch

The Greater Memphis Chamber has released its latest annual list of 10 local companies to watch in the coming year.

The 10 companies – chosen for making big strides this year and for their potential for even greater things in 2014 – are:

– BioNanovations
– Highwoods Properties
– International Paper
– Kronos Energy Solutions
– Regional Medical Center at Memphis
– Memphis College of Art
– nexAir
– Prodigi Arts
– RedRover Sales & Marketing
– Victory Packaging

“These Memphis businesses were chosen for the tremendous strides they have made over the past year,” said Amy Daniels, the chamber’s senior vice president over membership and communications. “They add to our local economy, more importantly they bring jobs to our city. The Chamber is proud to give this recognition to our members and look forward to their future success.”

The next issue of the chamber’s Memphis Crossroads Magazine, which will be distributed at the chamber’s Annual Chairman’s Luncheon Dec. 10, will have more details about each company. A digital edition of that magazine will be available at the chamber’s website in mid-December.

Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar has added something new to its menu

Downtown’s Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar has added something new to its midday menu with daily chef’s plate lunches.

Chef-partner Joshua Perkins is introducing weekly Southern-flavored specials like fried chicken, seasonal vegetables and home-style desserts.

It harkens back to the concept of a traditional Southern meal. Flight guests will get a choice of one meat, two sides and a soup, salad or dessert with each chef’s plate.

Mondays will offer veal scaloppini as the meat offering. On Tuesdays it’s fontina-and-spinach-stuffed meatloaf, followed by buttermilk fried chicken on Wednesday, crispy Atlantic flounder on Thursday and black Angus prime rib on Friday.

Sides range from praline sweet potatoes to fried okra and squash casserole.

Verizon changes up its retail presence

Verizon is shaking up its brick-and-mortar retail presence.

The wireless giant is rolling out newly redesigned stores called Smart Stores that feature products in “mobile lifestyle zones” as well as a “wireless workshop zone.” The stores are similar to the new Destination Store concept Verizon rolled out this week at the Mall of America, just on a smaller scale.

The first Verizon Wireless Smart Store at 7665 Poplar Ave. was Verizon’s first Smart Store to open in the Memphis area, and over the next few years the company plans to convert its entire batch of 1,700 stores into Smart Stores.

Among other retail changes Verizon has in store is related to in-store pick-up and same-day delivery. Customers can now order devices online and pick them up at nearby stores in most cities. Same-day delivery also is available in New York, Dallas, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Philadelphia, with more cities added in coming months.
