Nothing Bundt Cakes arrives in Memphis

A new bakery called Nothing Bundt Cakes – specializing in “modern Bundt cakes” – is holding grand opening festivities for its new location at 5679 Poplar Ave. the week of Jan. 13.

The eatery features light, moist Bundt cakes with “custom concept cake decorations” and range from single-serving “Bundtinis” to larger cakes that serve up to 26 people.

There’s a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Germantown Chamber of Commerce Jan. 15. On Jan. 17, 20 percent of sales will benefit the Memphis Child Advocacy Center, and also that day guests can enjoy cakes paired with wine.

On Jan. 18, the first 50 guests who make a purchase will win free “Bundtlets” for a year – one per month.

Nothing Bundt Cakes was founded in 1997 and is based in Las Vegas.

Justice Scalia at the Peabody – “That wasn’t a very good question.”

A Memphis audience got to see U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia display some of his trademark brusqueness first-hand on Monday.

During a question-and-answer session at The Peabody following lunch-time remarks Scalia gave there, a teacher rose from the crowd and used his few moments to, instead of ask a question, praise an article Scalia wrote for The Wall Street Journal years ago. It was an excellent article, the teacher announced, adding that he regularly shared and talked about it with his students.

There was a round of respectful applause. Scalia had been staring down while the audience member praised him, giving the impression of listening intently. When the comments were finished, Scalia looked up, leaned into his microphone and responded:

“That wasn’t a very good question.”

He didn’t smile or laugh. He just went to the next audience member.

First Tennessee Bank opening Charleston office

First Tennessee Bank is preparing to open a new office outside Tennessee – its first in Charleston, South Carolina.

The new office will provide private client banking, wealth management, commercial financial services and commercial real estate services to the Charleston market, and First Tennessee’s presence there joins existing Mid-Atlantic offices in Winston-Salem, Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina, and in Richmond, Virginia.

Rotcher Watkins, Charlotte-based market executive and senior vice president, will lead the Charleston office. The team of bankers there includes Andy Thomas, senior vice president and commercial banking relationship manager; Allston Moore; senior vice president and private client team leader; and Shelly Clark, private client relationship manager.

NPR personalities will be Peabody duckmasters this week

National Public Radio personalities Carl Kasell and Peter Sagal will be serving as Peabody duckmasters this week.

They’ll be leading the Peabody’s famed ducks Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. That event is ahead of their taping of NPR’s news quiz show “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” at the Orpheum Dec. 19.

That show will be broadcast the following weekend on WKNO 91.1 (airing Sunday at 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.).
