Memphis Bioworks Foundation is completing the first $23 million Specialized Lab as part of a planned $450 million, 1.3 million-square-foot development for UT and Baptist Research Park. This lab alone will allow research currently being done outside of Memphis to stay here.
Memphis Medical Center, the redevelopment group for the area funded by the hospitals and the universities themselves, employs 20,000, teaches 10,000 students and 700,000 patients each year. The nonprofit has an annual $3 billion operating budget.

Just before the holiday break, Memphis congressman Steve Cohen gave some brief remarks from the House floor on the still-unresolved fiscal cliff. In his remarks, he makes reference to needing new revenue “to rectify some wrongs in our society.”
