State Sen. Brian Kelsey hikes up Mt. Kilimanjaro

A few weeks ago, State Sen. Brian Kelsey, R-Germantown, made a five-day hike to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The cover photo of his Facebook page shows the senator standing beside the sign at the top of the mountain (which bills it as the “world’s highest free standing mountain) and which reads “Congratulations! You are now at Uhuru Peak”.

Repeatedly during the hike, Kelsey wrote in a recap to recipients of his email newsletter, his guide told him “po-le, po-le” – Swahili for “slowly, slowly.”

“The final ascent on day five was six grueling hours of climbing,” Kelsey wrote. “The last hour before reaching the crater rim of the volcano was the steepest part of the hike, and it was up scree, which is loose dirt. Every step forward results in a half-step slide backward.”

However, Kelsey’s summary concludes, “Once I finally reached the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the views from above the clouds made all the hard work worthwhile.”
