How Memphis-area congressional leaders voted on Patriot Act reauthorization

For those of you reading all the bombshell revelations today about the government’s expansive data-gathering capabilities, here is how Memphis-area lawmakers voted when it came time to reauthorize the Patriot Act in 2011.

Below, a yes is a vote to reauthorize the Patriot Act.

(A provision of the Patriot Act has apparently been used to justify the government freely accessing user data from major tech companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and others).

Marsha Blackburn (R) – yes

Stephen Fincher (R) – yes

Steve Cohen (D) – no

Alan Nunnelee (R) – yes

One note: The details of the info-gathering program are necessarily murky because it is a leak of highly classified material, but it appears the government believes it was on legal ground in hoovering up data from the big tech companies because of yes votes like those above.
