The NBA’s second season has ended for the Memphis Grizzlies. No need to rehash the gory details or guess about the power of Kevin Durant’s backpack.
Just a simple suggestion. Keep the Believe Memphis signs up. The Grizzlies-centric campaign has clearly taken on a life of its own albeit largely powered by the team’s winning ways.
But let’s keep the signs up as a statement of other goals to be accomplished between now and next season like our recovery from the flooding or just our never ending search for civic identity and self determination.
And I would make one more request – broaden our definition of Memphis to include all of Shelby County and beyond.
Memphis is about more than boundaries on a map. If we want a Memphis with a global identity, we have to give that identity a broader scope than people who live within a certain area.
Anyone who has been on Facebook for more than a minute realizes that to some degree we all become expatriates of some sort whether it is of a geographical location or a school or a workplace. As the Grizzlies advanced in the playoffs those expatriates also adopted the Believe Memphis logo and attitude.
Wouldn’t it be nice to know that the spirit continues to burn in Memphis as we meet other challenges and pursue other goals now that the season is over.
