Now you see it, now you don’t (the hidden tax increase, that is)

So it turns out better than expected property tax collections will help the city pay money the city school district has been asking for since 2008.

One reason property tax collections are doing fine is because the city’s tax rate last year of $3.19 was 7 cents higher than it needed to be, as The Daily News reported here.

The city overestimated what it thought it would lose when property owners appealed their new appraisals and won a lower tax bill for themselves.
